Frequently Asked Questions

Please reach us at FAQ@lifetosoil.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.

At Buffalo Mountain Living Soil, we practice regenerative farming, which involves using methods that improve soil health, encourage biodiversity, and reduce our environmental impact.

Removing chlorine from tap water is very important for maintaining healthy soil biology, especially in living soils designed to promote microbial life. Here’s why:

  1. Chlorine and Microorganisms:
    • Chlorine and chloramine (used in treated water) are antimicrobial agents. While their purpose is to kill harmful bacteria in drinking water, they can also harm beneficial soil microbes, such as bacteria, fungi, and other organisms essential for nutrient cycling and soil health.

  1. Impact on Soil Biology:
    • Chlorine can reduce populations of beneficial microbes, disrupting the balance of the soil microbiome.
    • This imbalance can hinder nutrient availability, as microbes are vital for processes like nitrogen fixation, decomposition, and nutrient uptake.

  1. Living Soil Systems:
    • In living soils, the microbial ecosystem is the foundation of soil fertility. Protecting this ecosystem ensures plants receive nutrients naturally, without the need for synthetic fertilizers.

How to Remove Chlorine:

  • Dechlorination Methods:
    • Let Water Sit: Allow tap water to sit uncovered for 24-48 hours. Chlorine will naturally off-gas, though this does not work for chloramine.
    • Activated Carbon Filters: Use water filters designed to remove chlorine and chloramine.
    • Vitamin C: Add ascorbic acid (vitamin C) to neutralize chlorine/chloramine. It’s safe and effective.
    • Aeration: Bubble air through water for a few hours to speed up dechlorination.

Conclusion:

Removing chlorine is crucial if you want to maximize the effectiveness of living soil biology. It ensures a thriving microbial population, leading to healthier plants and a more sustainable growing environment.
